Researches at University of Strathclyde in Scotland have found a way to kill the new strain of antibiotic resistant superbugs that are infesting hospitals.  Scott MacGregor, John Anderson, Michelle Maclean, and Gerry Woosley came together to develop a high-intensity narrow-spectrum (HINS) light system that decontaminates the air.

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and C diff (clostridium difficile) are two of the most prevalent and most difficult to remove bugs in hospitals. Traditional methods for decontamination involve using gas sterilizers or UV- light which can be dangerous to staff and patients. The HINS lighting system that is used in combination with LED light is harmless to humans and can be used alongside the lights already installed in hospitals. The light will treat the air and all visible surfaces; even reflected exposure to the light will be effective. It works by exciting the molecules within the bacteria that in turn produces a reactive chemical species that is lethal to the bacteria.

Clinical trials have begun at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and have shown between a fifty-six percent and eighty-six percent reduction of bacterial levels. Hospitals would now be able to continually be disinfecting rooms and areas and hopefully destroying the strains of superbugs that found within them.
